Gloucester High School opens the 2013 football season tonight in a meeting with the Phoebus Phantoms at 7 o’clock in Hampton.
Senior James Scott will again be at the helm for the Dukes this year to lead their shotgun offense. Scott, who is headed to Towson University next season, rushed for over 1,000 yards last year and accounted for most of the Gloucester offense.
GHS head coach Brandon Kelley will be opening his debut season and said he and his staff have been pleased with the Dukes’ progress in practice. "We’re very pleased. We’re on the right path," he said.
An Aug. 16 scrimmage with Poquoson went well, Kelley said, with Gloucester scoring twice. He said the defense also played well. "Right now we’re just trying to get better every time we step on the field," said Kelley, who faces a tough opener in Phoebus. "Right now, they’re all big games for us."
