Dukes lose 21-14; put scare in unbeaten Heritage

Gloucester High School fell to host Heritage, 21-14, on Friday as the Hurricanes remained undefeated on the season. The Dukes’ effort was hampered by five turnovers, including three interceptions and two fumbles. Thirteen penalties also helped erase over 300 yards of offense.

The Hurricanes recovered one fumble for a touchdown and a 7-0 lead at halftime. In the second half, Heritage quarterback Jeremiah Boyd threw a 48-yard touchdown pass to Timothy Holden-Bethea and ran for a one-yard score.

James Scott got things going for Gloucester in the second half with touchdowns in each of the two final quarters. He tallied 189 yards overall on 30 carries. On defense, senior Troy Shackelford had three sacks, several tackles for a loss and multiple assists.

The gains put Scott over the 1,000-yard mark for the second consecutive year. The Dukes’ standout now has 1,039 yards for the season with three games remaining. Gloucester is scheduled to play at Hampton today.
