Dukes fall to Phantoms in opening round

Gloucester High School varsity basketball players battled their way into their first Peninsula District Tournament in a dozen years last week, but it was a short stay. The eighth-seeded Gloucester team fell to top ranked Phoebus, 91-60, in the first round of the tournament on Tuesday.

The Dukes secured their tourney berth by beating Denbigh, 69-66, in overtime last Thursday. A.J. Hamilton had a game-high 24 points in the win, including two three-point goals. Christopher Morgan contributed 16, including a three-point shot, and Devonte Smith had 11 points. Ryan Wilson, Adam Baldwin and Jake Roane also hit three-point shots.

Gloucester closed the regular season with a 9-13 record overall; 6-12 in the district.
