Gloucester High School varsity soccer players again split games in recent action. The Dukes got by Menchville, 1-0, for the second time this season on May 6 but lost at Indian River on Friday, 4-3. Both games count in Conference 10 standings.
The Dukes were dominant against the visiting Monarchs. With the help of defender Robert Hargrave, they were able to control the Menchville attacks and counter with their own. Gloucester scored when a bullet pass from Chris Bendit found striker Nick Yarkey, who again hit a clutch lower corner goal to edge out the Monarchs.
Coming out strong against Indian River, Bendit again guided the ball to Yarkey for two goals to shock the Braves about midway through the first half. Indian River responded with two goals, both on free kicks, to tie it before the half.
