Dual party primary

Polls were open Tuesday in Gloucester, Mathews and throughout Virginia in Republican and Democratic primaries. Locally, voters were asked to choose between two Democratic candidates for the 1st Congressional District seat held by Rep. Rob Wittman (R-Montross) and the Republican nominee to oppose Sen. Tim Kaine in the November general election. Voters were scarce in the morning at the Botetourt Precinct in Gloucester’s Ware District. As of 7:50 a.m., with the polls open for nearly two hours, only 17 people had cast votes. Here, election workers Kay Van Dyke and Heather Nash, seated, check off husband-and-wife Derek and Angela Jones and give them their ballots. With an early deadline this week because of the Juneteenth holiday, results were not available at press time.
