The Virginia Northern Neck Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., has awarded scholarships totaling $11,370 to seven local students, including one from Mathews High School.
The scholarships were awarded based on the students’ academic success, involvement in the community and school activities, a release said.
Among the recipients is Marysol Richardson of Mathews High School, who was awarded the Veda B. Watts scholarship in the amount of $2,290. Richardson was captain of the MHS cheerleading squad and volunteered at Mathews Memorial Library. According to the release, she describes herself as being kind-hearted, hardworking, and determined. She believes in the world’s treasures, unity between species, and taking a stand for what is right. In the fall, she plans to major in pre-law.
