Two services remembering the life and legacy of slain civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will be held on Sunday in Mathews and on Monday in Gloucester.

The Mathews NAACP will hold its annual event in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. beginning at 3 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church, 9654 Buckley Hall Road, Mathews.
The Rev. Isaiah J. Smith, senior pastor of First Baptist Church, will be the program’s guest speaker. The theme of this year’s program is “We Are Still Not Going Back.”
Smith was raised by his late grandmother, Anna P. Studwell, a native of Newport News. He graduated from Denbigh High School in 2018. He is enrolled in Piedmont Technical College in Greenwood, South Carolina, pursuing an Associate Degree in Applied Science – Funeral Service. He is employed as a funeral service professional at C.C. Carter Funeral Home and a dispatch manager for Delivery Dynamic Solutions LLC (Amazon Delivery).
