Dr. Charles Wight McComb, 84, of Bena, passed away Jan. 1, 2015 surrounded by his loving family.
He grew up in Washington, D.C., graduated from the University of Maryland and served in the U.S. Air Force during the 1950s. He earned a PhD in entomology, worked for the Maryland Department of Agriculture over 20 years and, after retiring, moved from Maryland, with his wife, Peggy, to Gloucester County, Va. He was a member of First Church Christ, Scientist, Boston, Mass.; an active member of the Holly Society of America and founding member of its Colonial Virginia Chapter; served on the Gloucester Mosquito Control Commission from 1996-2012, as well as several professional and nature oriented organizations. As a Boy Scout he achieved the highest honor of Eagle Scout. He enjoyed the outdoors, gardening, birding and raptor watching.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Margaret Disney McComb; daughters, Patricia McComb Dawson and husband Douglas and Catherine Frances McComb; son, Robert Disney McComb and wife Melanie; grandchildren, Sarah and Bobby, and brother, Robert B. McComb, PhD.
A celebration of Charles’ life, officiated by Lois Hornsby and Yorke Nelson, will be held at 2 p.m. March 14, 2015 at Hogg Funeral Home, Gloucester Point, Va.
