Dorothy Callis South, 91, of Newport News, passed away on Dec. 2, 2013.

 

She was born on Gwynn’s Island to the late J. Edgar and Carrie Belle Callis. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hubert J. South, and brothers, James, Johnny and Whitley Callis.

 

Mrs. South was a member of Morrison United Methodist Church, and served for many years at the polls in Beaconsdale. She was a resident of The Chesapeake where she served on the worship committee.

 

She is survived by her daughter, Donna Goolsby and her husband Trip; a son, H.J. South Jr. and his wife Mary; grandsons, Lt. Taylor J. South and Hunter South; a brother, George W. Callis and his wife Gerri, and numerous nieces and nephews. 

 

The family will receive friends on Thursday, Dec. 5, 2013, at W.J. Smith & Son Funeral Home from 6-7 p.m. A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 6, 2013, at the funeral home with the Rev. Dr. Nancy Hayes officiating. Burial following in Peninsula Memorial Park. 

 

The family wishes to express many thanks to her friends and staff at The Chesapeake, especially to the Health Care Unit who were so caring and compassionate during her stay there.
