DOROTHY ANNE BURROUGHS

On Saturday, April 19, 2025, Dorothy Anne Burroughs (née Ailsworth), 90, of Hudgins, Virginia, reunited with her family and friends who left this Earth before her. She was born to Robert Dea and Lelia Virginia Bratton Ailsworth at their home on Lovers Lane in Deltaville, Va., on April 9, 1935. Teenie, as she was known to her family and friends during her childhood, was one of 11 children. Teenie had aspirations of being a surgical nurse. Those evaporated upon meeting a young Coastie who would become her husband of 72 years–Wilbur Coles Burroughs.

Dottie (as her husband affectionately called her) and Coles’s life together began in Virginia and shortly thereafter made their way to Maryland when her husband was transferred due to his job at NASA. Several years later, Dottie supported her husband in starting a family-owned machine tool distributorship. They raised their three children there but never forgot their Virginia roots. After retiring, she and Coles settled permanently in Mathews County and often spent their winters enjoying the warm climate in Florida.

She was preceded in death by her husband; daughter, Deborah Anne Burroughs, and many siblings.

She is survived by her daughter, Cindy Deakyne; her son, Wilbur Coles Burroughs II; her daughter-in-law, Marianne; seven grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at Faulkner Funeral Homes, Foster-Faulkner Chapel in Mathews on Tuesday, April 29 at 11 a.m., with visitation at 10 o’clock. Interment will follow at H.C. Smither Memorial Cemetery, Hudgins. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Piankatank Ruritan Club, P.O. Box 11, Hudgins, Va. 23076.
