The American Legion Auxiliary Unit #75 of Gloucester is asking for community donations in order to increase the number of Gloucester County delegates to the 2022 ALA Girls State, to be held June 20-25 at Longwood University in Farmville.
The Girls State program, started in 1946, is open to girls completing their junior year of high school. This interactive program teaches the formation and operation of city, county and state government entities.
Participants vote and carry out elected and appointed positions in the Girls State government. The program gives participants the experience of living together as self-governing citizens with the privileges, rights and responsibilities of American citizenship, as well as the opportunity to gain knowledge of the American Legion Auxiliary.
Last summer, a delegate from Gloucester High School was elected as Governor of Girls State. More information about the program can be found online at www.vagirlsstate.org.
