After defeating King William twice in the regular season, the Mathews High School varsity baseball team will have to beat the Cavaliers one more time in order to claim the Tidewater District title.
Mathews and King William (both 6-2 in the district) will face off in a one-game playoff at 6 p.m. Friday at Deltaville Park.
The Devils’ most recent victory over the Cavs came in Monday night’s regular season finale at King William. In this must-win situation, Mathews took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, with the team’s two seniors—Chris Davis and Daniel Mitchem—crossing the plate. Chris Perrault scored in the second inning to increase the lead to 3-0.
Mathews had the Cavaliers shut down until the fourth inning when they finally had one run cross the plate. As the sixth inning came, one more Mathews run scores and the game ended with Mathews winning 4-1.
