The Mathews High School varsity baseball team picked up wins over King and Queen at home and at Middlesex during the past week, finishing the season with an undefeated record in conference play.
Against King and Queen last Wednesday, the game played out similarly to the previous meeting of these teams. Two runs in the first, two more in the second, four in the third and three more in the fourth would secure the Devils’ second slaughter-rule victory over the Tigers this year, 11-0.
Colin Cook, often pitching from the bullpen, started the game on the mound and looked flawless until his last pitch. He tossed three one-hit innings and struck out four to earn the win. Willie Fernald allowed no hits across two relief innings. RBIs were scattered across the Devils lineup, belonging to Logan Byrns (one), Zach Jarosz (two), Marshall Barrack (three), Paul Burnette (two), Will Harrington (one), Reggie Johnson (one) and Cook (one).
