Devils take 4th in state; 7 MHS wrestlers place

The Mathews High School wrestling team placed fourth overall in last weekend’s Class 1A VHSL state championships, held at the Salem Civic Center.
Three schools from the western part of the state—Grundy, Riverheads and Rural Retreat—claimed the top three spots with 277, 211 and 155.5 points, respectively.
Mathews earned 113 team points, thanks to second-place finishes by Alexis Deagle and Fabian Cardenas, fourth-place finishes from Cody Deagle and Noah Wright, two fifth-place finishes (Sawyer Stark and Ivan Schaible) and a sixth-place finish from Salvador Cardenas.
