The Mathews varsity baseball team had a long spring break week. Instead of enjoying time off from school, the Blue Devils played three home games against some tough opponents.
While Mathews came up empty against Northumberland, Rappahannock and Poquoson, the Devils’ luck finally changed on Tuesday, as the team opened its Tidewater District schedule with a convincing victory over King & Queen.
The Devils started spring break facing Northumberland at home on April 10. Mathews fell to the visiting Indians, 5-1. Ryan Ewell did the pitching, recording 12 strikeouts on the night. The only Blue Devil RBI came from Daniel Mitchem. Paul Burnette and Chris Davis were the only ones to get a hit during the game.
