The Mathews High Blue Devils battled a busy week of baseball, playing four games over six days. They went 2-2, winning against district foes King and Queen and Middlesex, falling to King William and Nandua.
MHS traveled May 1 to King William to play the district-leading Cavaliers. This matchup meant the difference between first and second in the district, and the tensions were high as expected.
The Cavs struck for two in the second, which was enough to take the 3-1 victory, as the Blue Devils accounted for one run in the fifth. Deondre Foster drove in Mathews’s only RBI on a double. Josh Wilson pitched solidly, going six innings and giving up only one earned run but took the loss.
