The Mathews High School varsity baseball team shut out Westmoreland, 12-0, in five innings last Thursday and dropped a 6-4 contest on Tuesday against Northumberland.
Thomas Hubbard was the winning pitcher against Westmoreland, striking out 12 of the 16 batters he faced, holding the Eagles to two hits.
Noah Wright and Dawson Adams each had two hits and scored two runs. Justin Jones had two hits and Aidan West scored three runs. There was one bit of bad news in the win—the Devils lost Timmy Dehoux for the season with a broken leg and ankle he suffered after sliding into home on a passed ball.
On Tuesday, West took the loss. He helped his own cause by picking up a hit and scoring a run. Adams had two hits, a single and a triple.
Mathews hosts Essex tonight, Thursday, March 30, at 5 o’clock.
