The Mathews High School varsity football team opened its Tidewater District schedule on a strong note, completely dominating the King and Queen Tigers on Saturday afternoon, 51-0.
Mathews scored points in all four quarters, while blanking the Royal Tigers on their home turf. Chris Davis led the MHS rushing attack with 141 yards on 11 carries.
While quarterback Michael Cunningham was only 4-for-4 in passing, two of those passes went for touchdowns as he connected with C.J. Kelly on second-quarter completions of 86 and 42 yards. Anthony Forrest caught a 54-yard pass while James Pavik had a 14-yard reception.
Mathews took a 21-0 halftime lead on a 5-yard run by Davis, as well as the two completions from Cunningham to Kelly. The Devils doubled the scoring total in the third quarter with two more Chris Davis touchdown runs (eight yards and seven yards) and a three-yard TD dive by Pavik.
