The Mathews High School wrestling team finished second out of 10 teams competing in the Mathews Invitational, which was held all day Saturday in the MHS gymnasium.
York High School won the invitational, with the Falcons amassing 188 points, followed by the Blue Devils (161 points), L.C. Bird (145 points), Northumberland (132 points), and the rest of the field.
Six Mathews wrestlers made it to Saturday afternoon’s finals, with Caleb Miller (120 lbs.), Sean Rhodes (126 lbs.) and Billy Bower (170 lbs.) posting 3-0 records to win their respective weight classes. Parker Thompson (138 lbs.), A.J. White (182 lbs.) and Austin Fravel (195 lbs.) each went 2-1 on the day to take second.
Two other MHS wrestlers—Sam Moore and Bill Riley—also placed. Moore (132 lbs.) went 2-1, placing third, while Riley (285 lbs.) earned a fourth-place finish after posting a 2-2 record on the day. Joey Scales (182 lbs.) also went 2-2, but failed to place.
