Devils move one win away from state tournament

After a 3-0 run in postseason play, the Mathews High School boys’ basketball team stands just one victory away from securing a spot in the VHSL Group 1A state tournament.
The Blue Devils defeated Middlesex and West Point last week to secure the Conference 42 title and kept that win streak alive with a 62-57 win over Franklin on Tuesday in the first round of the regional tournament.
Mathews will head to Lancaster High School on Friday to face Surry in the Region 1A East tournament semifinal. The winner will return to Lancaster on Saturday night for the regional championship game. Friday’s winner will also earn a berth in next week’s VHSL state semifinal game.
As the conference champs, Mathews hosted Franklin on Tuesday night and the Blue Devil crowd filled the stands early for what turned out to be another nail-biter for the fans.
