Devils looking for first soccer victory

The Mathews High School varsity soccer team, which has gotten off to a slow start, is still looking for its first victory.

The Blue Devils, coached by Ben Hurst, started the season with 16 players. Returning players include Will Sease, Brad Joselyn, Grant Avery, Jacob Johnson, Chris Barnhardt, Glenn Musgrove, Carter Vrooman, Ben Wood and Ryan Morgan.

Moving up from jayvee are Matthew Marquardt, Jason Williams, Tyler Tillman, Cody Greenfield, Matt DeForge and Brandon LaPointe. Also joining the team is Jamie van Emmerik.

Mathews lost its first game against Warhill on March 15. Although Mathews pushed hard on the field, having 10 shots on goal (two from Sease, four from Morgan and Avery, three from Musgrove, and one from Joselyn) and 15 keeper saves, Warhill came out on top, 3-1. Musgrove scored the lone Devils’ goal.
