Mathews High School varsity boys’ basketball team last week played the final two games of its regular season against district rivals West Point and Middlesex.
Mathews split the pair to finish second to the Pointers in Conference 42 standings. The second-seed Devils earned a first-round bye, and will begin post-season play on Friday when they host the winner of the Middlesex-King and Queen game, starting at 6 p.m.
If Mathews should win, the team would travel to Charles City on Saturday for a 7:30 p.m. championship game.
Heading into last Friday’s game at West Point, Mathews trailed the Pointers by a game in district standings. It was exactly this that drove the boys to come out with intensity as they jumped on the Pointers early.
