Devils go 2-1 in diamond action

The Mathews High School varsity baseball team picked up wins over Lancaster and King and Queen last week, also falling for the second time this season to the Central Virginia Home School squad.

Last Wednesday, Mathews returned to the field after suffering a disappointing loss the night before. This time around, the Blue Devils proved they were capable of playing a complete ball game, beating the Lancaster Red Devils, 8-2.

Mathews played great defense with no errors, and had a strong pitching performance from Ryan Ewell, who went seven innings, giving up only two runs on four hits and four walks, striking out seven.

The Blue Devils came alive offensively, scoring one run in the first inning, two in the third, four in the fourth and one more run in the fifth.

Chris Davis went 2-for-2, Daniel Mitchem was 2-for-3 with three RBIs, James Pavik was 2-for-4 with two RBIs, Tyler Roberts 1-for-2, Ewell 1-for-4, Austin Kemp 1-for-3 and Michael Cunningham 1-for-3.
