The Mathews High School varsity baseball team advanced to the first round of the Region 1A tournament, falling on the road last Wednesday to Essex, 9-2.
Mathews batters were held to only three hits. Noah Wright led off with a double. Blake Hunley bunted safely. Colin Moore earned the RBI by driving in Wright. Moore later scored from third on a wild pitch. Timmy Dehoux added a line drive single in the top of the sixth to round out the offense for Mathews.
The Blue Devils ended the year with a 10-10 record, which was good enough to earn the team the #5 seed slot in the regional tournament.
“As for Mathews baseball, we look forward to continuing working on the game throughout the season to improve upon our craft for next season,” said head coach Wes Griffith.
