After preseason warmups against Jamestown and Tabb, the Mathews High School varsity boys’ basketball team opened its 2010-11 season on Friday against Poquoson.
The Bull Islanders showed no signs of missing several players who were out for the ongoing football playoffs, as they crushed the visiting Blue Devils, 72-37.
Poquoson went deep in its small bench and dominated the entire evening. The Islanders scored eight three-pointers in the game, including four in the first quarter.
Michael Cunningham was the only Devil player to score in double figures. The senior standout had 10 points. Chris Foster and C.J. Kelly, two other returning seniors, scored eight and six points, respectively. Rounding out the scoring for Mathews were Chase Kemp (four points), Carter Vrooman (two points), Deon Blake (two points) and Andre Carter (one point).
