Devils fall to Cavaliers, 56-0

The Mathews High School varsity football team fell to 1-6 (1-1 in the Tidewater District) following Friday night’s 56-0 shutout loss to the visiting King William Cavaliers.

King William (6-1) dominated from kickoff to final gun, taking less than a minute to score its first touchdown. The Cavaliers added four more touchdowns in the first half to pull ahead, 36-0. The MHS offense, meanwhile, was unable to get a first down until 3:36 in the first half, and that came on a pass interference penalty.

The Cavaliers added two more touchdowns in the second half, as the players switched to a running clock.

 

"We are going back to practice and try to win these final three football games," MHS head coach Paul White said.

Mathews will travel to West Point on Friday for a 7 p.m. game. The following Friday, Oct. 26, the Devils will host Nandua for the MHS homecoming game. The season ends the following Friday, Nov. 2, when Mathews travels to Middlesex to face the Chargers for th...
