Mathews completely controlled all facets of Saturday’s varsity football game against Arcadia to beat the visiting Firebirds, 42-6, and improve the Blue Devils’ record to 2-3 overall.
The Blue Devils’ dominance started from the opening kickoff, which Chris Davis returned for what would have been a touchdown if not for an illegal block. In spite of the penalty, Mathews took possession on the Firebirds’ 25-yard line.
The Devils scored eight plays later, as Michael Cunningham connected with a wide-open Jared Inge for a nine-yard touchdown pass on a fourth-down play. Ryan Morgan, who was a perfect six-for-six in PAT attempts, then added the extra point to give Mathews an early 7-0 lead.
