The Mathews High School varsity boys’ basketball team soundly defeated the visiting King and Queen Tigers last Thursday, and suffered a narrow defeat at the hands of the Northampton Yellow Jackets on Friday. Mathews was scheduled to face Carver Academy on Tuesday; however, that game was a casualty of the inclement weather.

In the opener of a home tripleheader last Thursday, the JV boys defeated the Tigers, 27-18. MHS took a 6-2 lead in the first quarter, struggleda little in the second, and trailed 9-8 at the half. The third quarter was a shift in momentum back to Mathews as King and Queen couldn’t stop Finn McKinster. The first-year forward dominated by scoring six points in the quarter, on the way to a 15-point night.
In the boys’ varsity nightcap of the evening, the Blue Devils dominated the Tigers, 86-48. Both teams received technicals in the first quarter. Senior Tre Greene was unstoppable in the first, grabbing steals and scoring 11 points to lead the Blue Devils. ...
