The Mathews High School varsity soccer team recovered from a 5-0 shutout loss to the Trojans two Wednesdays ago to come back and defeat the Northumberland Indians, 4-1, on their home turf on April 4. Last Wednesday, the Devils played the Rappahannock Raiders in a highly competitive game that ended in a 5-4 win for Mathews.
In the Essex game, although both teams sparred for possession throughout the contest, the Devils’ 11 shots on goal couldn’t quite match up with the Essex Trojans, who caught some lucky breaks in the back to run up the score.
Mathews went into their game with the Indians confident from their previous win against them and took an early lead in the first five minutes with a goal by Justin Jenkins. Not long after that, P.J.
