The Mathews High School wrestling team scored victories over King William and Middlesex last Thursday in a tri-meet that served as the Tidewater District tournament.
In the first contest, the Devils defeated King William, 43-34. Winning by pin for Mathews were Matt Rouland (125 lbs.), Russell Reed (152 lbs.), C.W. Sorey (171 lbs.), James Pavik (189 lbs.) and Willie Moore (285 lbs.). Caleb Miller (103 lbs.) earned a major decision victory, while Billy Bower (160 lbs.) scored a 10-9 decision. Austin Fravel (215 lbs.) accepted a forfeit win. While Sean Rhodes (119 lbs.) lost a 12-0 major decision, by fighting off his back he gave up only four team points, instead of six.
Mathews had an easier time with Middlesex, beating the Chargers, 57-24. Pins were scored by Kane, Rhodes, Rouland, Reed, Pavik and Moore. Sorey won by a 3-0 decision. Miller, Jamie Perigny (130 lbs.) and Bower were awarded forfeit wins.
