The Mathews High School wrestling team placed fifth out of 11 teams at Saturday’s ReMax Ram Cup tournament at Lafayette High School.
Chancellor won the competition with 229 team points, followed by Varina (152.5), the host Rams (143), Norfolk Academy (136) and Mathews (134). Bishop Sullivan, Bruton, Kecoughtan, Warhill, Essex and Peninsula Catholic rounded out the field.
Seven of the nine MHS wrestlers competing ended up placing in their respective weight classes, including C.W. Sorey, who was crowned champion at 171 lbs. Sorey, who went 3-0 on the day, scored a 6-4 decision over Lafayette’s Tom Tuberville to earn the title.
Three other Blue Devils also made it all the way to the championship finals. Russell Reed (152 lbs.) and Jacob Green (215 lbs.) each compiled 2-1 records to finish second.
