Family Boatbuilding Week will be held Monday through Saturday, June 19-24, at the Deltaville Maritime Museum and Holly Point Nature Park, 287 Jackson Creek Road.
There are no spots left to participate in the boatbuilding, but the public is invited to visit the park during the week to watch as each participating family builds a 14-foot rowing skiff designed by the late Deltaville boatbuilder John Wright. The boats are made of cypress and fir and are held together with stainless steel fasteners.
The boats are expected to be completed by Saturday morning, when the families will try out their boats by participating in the “Great Skiff Race” beginning at 10 a.m. “It’s fun to watch as the determined skiff builders play ‘bumper boats’ jockeying for position behind the starting line,” said Bill Powell of the Deltaville Maritime Museum in a press release. There will be a trophy presentation after the race.
