The 2023 season for the Deltaville Deltas was kicked off in a big way Saturday night, as Deltaville pounded out 12 hits on the way to a 15-5 victory over the Tappahannock Tides.
Colton Smith led the early offensive attack in the bottom of the first inning, blasting a three-run homer to cap a four-run opening frame rally. The hit parade continued in the second inning, with Spencer Crittenden, Chase Fisher and Brandt Brophy each driving in runs on RBI hits, and the Deltas took a commanding 11-0 lead in the early going.
Tappahannock began to strike back in the third inning, however. Stringing together three hits and scoring three runs, the Tides’ rally was cut short only by the Deltas throwing out a runner at the plate for the final out of the inning. The Tides held the Deltas’ bats at bay in the bottom half of the inning, and plated two more runs of their own in the fourth to cut Deltaville’s lead to 11-5.
