The top-seeded Deltaville Deltas defeated the fifth-seeded VBA 61’s in the opening game of the Southern Virginia Baseball League tournament Saturday night, 3-2, but fell to the second-seeded Newport News Cardinals, 5-0, on Sunday.
With the loss in the double-elimination tournament, the Deltas must play from the losers’ bracket this weekend to capture their first SVABL league title.
In all, three teams advanced to the final weekend of the tournament. The Deltas will face the 61’s again this Saturday night in the final loser’s bracket game, as the 61’s bounced back to eliminate the third-seeded Peninsula Pirates on Sunday. The winner of the Deltas-61’s game will take on the Cardinals on Sunday at Christopher Newport University, needing to beat them twice to claim the championship. Sunday’s games will start at 1 p.m. at Captains Park in Newport News.
