Deltas cruise to win in season opener

The Deltaville Deltas needed little time to overcome an early 2-0 deficit on Saturday night. Deltaville scored 11 runs in the first two innings as they cruised past the Hampton Braves, 14-3, in the opening game of the 2013 Southern Virginia Baseball League season.

After Hampton opened the game with a two-run home run in the top of the first inning, Deltaville quickly tied the game in the bottom half on a two-run single off the bat of former Gloucester High School standout Jacob Houston.

In the following inning, Deltas second baseman Alexander Crittenden and the rest of the offense put the game out of reach, sending 14 batters to the plate in a nine-run onslaught. Crittenden, the fourth Delta to step to the plate in the frame, knocked a two-run single to start the scoring rally, and capped it nine batters later with his second two-run hit.
