Mathews High School placed fourth as a team at Saturday’s 1A/1B Super Regional Tournament at Cumberland High School, and all nine Mathews wrestlers advanced to the state tournament.
Alexis Deagle was the only individual champion for Mathews, placing first in the 106 lbs. bracket. She was also voted the Region 1A/1B Wrestler of the Year.
Cody Deagle was runner-up at 132 lbs. Brady Wright (170 lbs.) and Malachai Dixon (195 lbs.) both placed third; Noah Wright (145 lbs.) and Jacob Love (113 lbs.) placed fourth; Jake Brown (126 lbs.) and Mikey Ray (120 lbs.) placed fifth, while Preston Mullins (182 lbs.) took sixth place at the 1A/1B Super Regional.
All of those wrestlers will go on to compete for state titles at the VHSL Class 1 state tournament, which will be held on Feb. 18-19 at the Salem Civic Center.
