David Edward Anderton passed away on July 27, 2022 at Williamsburg Landing at the age of 94. David was born to the late Vashti Tillage and James Edward Anderton in December of 1927 overlooking Sarah’s Creek at Gloucester Point, Va. He grew up enjoying the outdoors, especially swimming, crabbing, and fishing in Sarah’s Creek and the York River. David attended Hayes Elementary School and graduated from Achilles High School. At age 16 he was enrolled at Virginia Polytechnic Institute (VPI) and then attended the Maritime School at Sheepshead Bay, New York, upon joining the Merchant Marine. He made numerous trips across the North Atlantic on Liberty Ships and Troop Ships. He later joined the Army, serving in Japan under Douglas MacArthur in the Army of Occupation. In 1949 he joined the Peninsula Bank and Trust Company as an officer trainee. There he spent his entire banking career, retiring after 36 years, as Senior Vice-President. David took banking classes at the University of Virginia and received his banking certificate from Rutgers University in 1956. He taught banking classes while working at the bank. In 1952 he married Ruth Corr Anderton and they moved to Williamsburg from Gloucester Point in 1956. They celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in June of this year. David was a past member of the Williamsburg Lions Club; served on the Chamber of Commerce Board; was a member of the James City County School Board for six years where he served as chairman for three years; was a past member of Williamsburg Coin Club; served as treasurer of the Salvation Army; was a member of the Electoral Board; was treasurer of Williamsburg United Methodist Church, serving on its Finance Committee, and was on its Board of Trustees. He was a member of the Middle Plantation Retired Men’s Club. David enjoyed traveling, golfing, and gardening, especially raising azaleas and rhododendrons.
In addition to his parents, his sister, Janice Anderton, preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife, Ruth C. Anderton; son, David E. Anderton Jr. and wife Joanne; daughter, Dale A. Sauls and husband Gordon G. Sauls Jr.; granddaughter, Dillon S. Bass; grandson, Gordon “Tripp” G. Sauls III and wife Betsy B. Sauls; grandson, Tyler E. Anderton, and great-granddaughters, Grayson Bass and Morgan Bass. The family will receive friends on Sunday, Aug. 7, 2022, at Anderson Auditorium, 5700 Williamsburg Landing Drive, Williamsburg, Va. 23185 from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. A funeral service conducted by the Rev. Meghan Roth Clayton will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 8, 2022, at Williamsburg United Methodist Church, 500 Jamestown Road, Williamsburg, Va. 23185, followed by a 2 p.m. interment at Gloucester Point Cemetery, 1860 Hayes Road, Gloucester Point, Va. 23062.
