David C. Thornton, “D.C.,” of Suffolk, died May 6, 2014.

He was predeceased by his parents, William L. Thornton Sr. and Hilda “14” Hodges Thornton. He was also preceded in death by his oldest brother, William L. Thornton Jr.

D.C. was born in Mathews, Va., and as a baby moved to Norfolk, Va., where he attended several schools. His parents then moved to Virginia Beach and he attended Bayside High. After the death of his father, he moved with his mother back to Mathews and graduated from Mathews High. He was president of the MHS Class of 1970. He served in the Army in Vietnam and other locations overseas. He retired from UPS in 2009 and then traveled over the U.S.

Survivors include his daughter, Heather Schreiber (Tim); his grandchildren, Mackenzie and Parker; his brothers, Jesse C. Thornton of Mathews, and Dickie Thornton of Deltaville, and his sister, Diane T. Huss of Chesapeake.

D.C. liked his privacy, but always liked to make everyone laugh at family functions, would help when needed and loved everyone in his own way.
