Fishing has been pretty much hit and miss over the past week, according to local bait and tackle shops.
Jerry Thrash of Queens Creek Outfitters at Cobbs Creek, reported on and off flounder fishing over the past week, but said croakers are still available in the Rappahannock River. "Anglers caught croaker to 18 inches along with small gray trout, spot and puppy drum," Thrash said.
He said spot averaging about a half-pound are being caught off Gwynn’s Island, Butlers Hole and the Spike, though patches of red tide are still in the river.
Spanish mackerel and bluefish were found from Windmill Point south to Gwynn’s Island and the Hole-in-the-Wall, but the best mackerel fishing was between MH1 and Wolf Trap Light, Thrash said.
He reported that Hank Ireson of Topping, caught a 3-pound, 2-ounce croaker at the White Stone Bridge.
