Crash on bridge takes a life

A two-vehicle crash Saturday morning in the southbound lanes of the George P. Coleman Bridge in Gloucester resulted in the death of a 44-year-old Hayes man and detoured Peninsula-bound traffic for several hours.

The accident took place around 8 a.m. A 2018 Kia Forte traveling southbound on Route 17 struck a disabled 2019 GMC Sierra pickup with a trailer that was partially in the right travel lane, the Virginia State Police reported.

The pickup truck was pulled over to the right shoulder because of a mechanical issue. The Kia Forte then went off Route 17 to the right side and struck the trailer.

A passenger in the Sierra had gotten out of the vehicle and was in between the trailer and the Sierra at the time of the crash. He was pinned between the vehicle and the trailer.

The passenger, Jose O. Salinas Estrada, 44, of Hayes, died at the scene. The driver of the Sierra was not injured, while the driver of the Forte was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening inju...
