County reimbursing taxpayers for convenience fees

The Mathews County Treasurer’s Office is processing the convenience fees that were waived by the board of supervisors for the second-half real estate and personal property payments that were received by credit and debit cards beginning Nov. 24, 2020 due to the emergency closing of the office caused by COVID-19, according to Treasurer Wendy Stewart.
“Due to the refunds for convenience fees beginning at such a low amount of $1.05, I feel that it is best we ask if you prefer a check instead of a prepayment to your 2021 taxes,” Stewart said.
If you had made a payment and expect reimbursement of convenience fees, contact the treasurer’s office by Feb. 26. If you have not contacted the office by that date, the office will apply the credit to the person’s 2021 taxes.
