Sparked by junior Jordyn Cosby’s grand slam in the bottom of the third inning, the Mathews High School varsity baseball team crushed the visiting Northampton Yellow Jackets on Monday, 19-9, in a five-inning affair. The Blue Devils weren’t so lucky on Tuesday, dropping a 9-1 game on the road to King William.

Mathews and the visiting Yellow Jackets sparred in the first few innings, with Northampton taking a 2-0 lead in the first inning, and the Devils responding with two runs of their own in the bottom of the frame, with Noah Wright getting an RBI hit and scoring himself on wild pitch.
Northampton scored two more in the top of the second, with Mathews closing the gap to 4-3 in the bottom of the inning. The Yellow Jackets took advantage of errors and walks to score five more runs in the top of the third. This did not discourage the Blue Devils at all.
