Cool temperatures have the fish biting at Beaverdam Park and schools of shad all over the lake are giving them plenty to feed on, according to park ranger Eddie Hester. Bass fishing continues to be the main focus of anglers, Hester said, with bass in the two-six pound range being caught.

The crappie fishing has dropped off some but sunfish are plentiful and keep children busy fishing from the pier. Catfish are also being caught in large numbers, and Paul Burlingame of Gloucester hooked a 26 inch, 8 lb., 8 oz. catfish last week.

The next outing in the Big Bash Bass Tournament series is Saturday. For more information call the ranger station at 693-2107.

Glenn Timberlake of Port Haywood, caught and released a 50-inch red drum Friday while fishing near New Point Comfort Lighthouse, according to Morningstar Marinas Gwynn’s Island general manager Tina Minor. She also reminded residents that rockfish season begins Oct. 4.
