A couple years following their marriage, while living in Hampton, Mac and Jeannie Fitzgerald decided it was time to buy a house and start a family. Looking in their local area brought no results. Then a friend said, “Why don’t you look in Gloucester?”
They did; they bought a house “that needed a lot of repairs,” and joined a unique area of Gloucester County, making their new home in the Guinea community. Their two sons grew up here and one remains close by today.
Jeannie, a city girl, remembers her first impressions of her new location. “Everyone wore white boots. And it took me awhile to understand what everyone was saying.” But that was 54 years ago.
Today Jeannie is an essential part of the community. It is as if she were born here. To become this and to get acquainted with neighbors and become a part of her new community, Jeannie first joined the junior woman’s club, and then a clogging group that performed locally.
