CONNIE SMITH FIELD

Connie Smith Field, 66, born and raised in Gloucester, passed away on Wednesday, November 15, 2023, surrounded by her loving family. Connie was born to the late Kenneth B. and Jean Smith of Ware Neck, Virginia.

Her memory will be cherished by her husband of 40 years, Stephen A. Field, and her children, Stephen A. Field Jr. (Ashley) and Allyson F. Bridges (Chad). She was a loving and dedicated “Grammy” to Kenneth, Michelle, and Marion Field and Burke Bridges. She was a sister to Karen Soles (Blair), Debbie Zanca (Cris), Kathryn Tidwell (Ed); sister-in-law to Marcia Hall (Johnny), and leaves behind a host of nieces and nephews that adored her. She considered so many other people her family and would have done anything in the world for them, especially her cherished longtime friend Irene White.

Many will know and remember her smiling face from Smith’s Florist on Main Street in Gloucester, where she worked alongside her sister Karen and the rest of her family, who owned and operated the business for 54 years before being sold in 2018. After the sale of the business, she continued to work at the shop part-time, and also began spending more time with her daughter, Allyson, and sister Karen at Up South on Main Street. Connie greatly enjoyed being with her family and friends, but she especially loved lounging by the pool with her grandbabies, weekly dinners with her children, and her annual trips to Nags Head which were a family tradition for 42 years.

Her thoughtfulness and love were felt by many, through her acts of kindness–she rarely (if ever) missed a birthday, she was never short on hugs, and she crocheted baby blankets for many. Connie’s lighthearted spirit and positive attitude shined in every situation. Even throughout her fight with cancer, her true grit, strength, and courage showed daily. Her family is truly heartbroken but are rejoicing that she is no longer in pain.

The family would like to thank the nursing staff and employees of both Walter Reed Hospital and Riverside Peninsula Cancer Institute and Infusion Center, whose support and care could not have been better.

The family received friends from 4-5:30 p.m. on Sunday, November 19, 2023, at Andrews Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life took place at 2 p.m. on Monday, November 20, 2023, at Singleton United Methodist Church, 5869 Ware Neck Road, Gloucester, Va. 23061. Donations can be made in the form of flowers to honor Connie’s lifelong work and love of flowers or memorial donations can be sent to Gloucester Volunteer Fire Department, P.O.
