Concerns expressed about condition of Mathews tennis court

Mathews supervisors heard from a number of people at its Sept. 19 board meeting who are concerned about the condition of the county’s tennis courts, which were installed at least 30 years ago, according to Mathews Facilities and Grounds Manager Tim Tillage.
Tennis coach Jon Hatch told board members that the courts are a liability for the community because they’re a hazard for injuries. Grass is growing up through the courts and water stands on the playing surface, he said.
“If you have a facility, you have to do maintenance periodically,” he said. “We need to offer young and old alike a facility they can use.”
Mathews Elementary School teacher Chandler Long remembered the tennis courts being in good condition when she played for the Mathews High School tennis team in the early 2000s. Her team won the title three years in a row, she said, and she went on to play in college at Christopher Newport University. She now serves as a coach, and she urged the board to resurface the courts.
