Timberneck Creek was at low tide on the afternoon of Sunday, March 6. The herons take advantage of this opportunity to catch their dinner. On this day, a large shad was stranded in the mud. A heron noticed an experienced “fish thief” circling above and flared his neck hackles and crown to discourage the theft. The posturing did not work as an eagle soared in and snatched the fish right in front of the heron, providing quite a show for those living alongside the creek at Hayes.
