“Common Ground,” an exhibition of works by Melanie Chambers Hartman of Yorktown, will open with a reception from 6-8 p.m. at First Friday on March 2 at Arts on Main in Gloucester.
Hartman paints landscapes en plein air and in her studio. Her subjects are the tidal marshes and wetlands of coastal Virginia, rural farms near the Blue Ridge Mountains, the varied terrain and blue skies near Bisbee, Arizona, and scenes from inspiring travels abroad.
The exhibition will also include “A Western Adventure,” a special show-within-a-show of works by both Hartman and Carolyn Thompson Dudley from a painting trip the two friends took out west.
Live music will be provided by Connie Austin Smith, a Hampton Roads singer/songwriter/musician who has performed with several local ensembles over the years, including 23 years with the trio Tangent. She plays both original and traditional songs in bluegrass, Celtic and Scottish Gaelic styles, using several instruments, including guitar...
