Common Good candidates sweep BOS race; Edwards wins Mathews Sheriff

Tuesday’s election was a sweeping victory for Mathews Citizens for the Common Good’s three supervisor candidates, who handily won the highest vote totals in the nine-candidate field.
Supervisor candidate Janice Phillips had 2,088 votes, or 17.21 percent of the total, while Tim Doss had 1,899 votes, or 15.65 percent, and Tom Bowen had 1,846 votes, or 15.21 percent of the votes cast in the race. The three ran as a team under the Common Good umbrella, promising to focus on economic development, strong schools, increased tourism, cultural and recreational opportunities and public safety.
The three candidates sponsored by the Mathews Republican Committee, Billy Cook, Tricia Stall, and Randy Dobson, garnered 12.25 percent, 12.21 percent, and 10.16 percent of the vote, respectively, and incumbent candidates Paul Hudgins and Jackie Ingram had 9.26 percent and 4.92 percent, respectively. Newcomer independent Albert Clark pulled in 2.94 percent of the vote.
