A funeral for Cleveland Foster Oliver, 85, of Gloucester, was held on Dec. 9, 2011, in the chapel of Hogg Funeral Home, Gloucester Point. He died Dec. 3, 2011.
Though he was a Gloucester native, he spent most of his life in Northern Virginia. He graduated from Woodward Prep School in Washington, D.C., served his country in the U.S. Coast Guard in Norfolk, and was associated with the Virginia Pilot Association. His years were spent in sales at Glebe Radio and Appliance, Arlington, and Sears Roebuck & Co. For 59 years, Cleveland was a Mason belonging to Cherrydale Lodge No. 42; a member of the Arlington Commandery No. 29, Knights Templar; as well as lifetime member of Beech Grove Baptist Church, Coke.
Mr. Oliver’s parents, Benjamin Lowry Oliver and Elizabeth Larkin Oliver; a sister, Estelle; and brothers, Benjamin, Monroe and Leonard, preceded him in death.
Survivors include sisters, Ann Ruth Nuttall of Gloucester, and Nellie Oliver Grant of Arlington, and many nieces and nephews.
The funeral service was conducted by the Rev. Clarence Hilling, the Rev. Bob Robbins, and Rev. Dr. Glen Bohannan. Interment, with Masonic Rites led by Marceron Nuttall, followed in Beech Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Benjamin Borden Jr., Ronald Oliver, Jeffrey Blake, Craig Bradford, Michael Barrone, and Dabney Wharton. Honorary pallbearers were Robert Clayton, Brian Oliver, Charles Grant, and Dirk van der Sluijs.
